Odoo Manufacturing has matured fast. For SME and lower mid-market manufacturers, it now genuinely competes with dedicated MES and MRP tools — at a fraction of the licence cost and with the rest of the ERP for free. The catch is that 'manufacturing' covers a huge spread of business models, and Odoo fits some beautifully and others painfully. This guide is the honest map.

We've implemented Odoo Manufacturing for assembly shops, machine builders, food producers, light chemicals, contract manufacturers, metal workshops and a few hybrid make-to-order/make-to-stock operations. The pattern is clear: Odoo wins on integration, agility and total cost; it loses against vertical specialists when your processes need shop-floor systems with millisecond-level control or deeply regulated batch traceability.

If you're picking Odoo Manufacturing, the design conversation matters more than the licence price. Bills of material, routings, work centres, quality control points and the stock interplay can be set up beautifully — or be turned into a maze. We've inherited both kinds. The good news: a clean Odoo Manufacturing setup runs for years with very little drama.


Where Odoo Manufacturing fits — and where it doesn't

Odoo fits SME assembly, light manufacturing, kitting, contract manufacturing and discrete production with simple to moderately complex routings. It handles MTO and MTS, multi-level BOMs, subcontracting and rework. It integrates beautifully with sales, purchase, inventory and accounting because it's the same data.

Where it doesn't fit: heavy regulated pharma with full GMP audit trails, deep process industries with continuous flows and tank management, or shops with very high-frequency MES needs (sub-second machine telemetry, tight PLC integration). Those need a vertical MES on top of — not instead of — Odoo, or a different ERP entirely.

Bills of material and routings — get the structure right or pay forever

BOM design is where 80% of manufacturing implementations are won or lost. Multi-level BOMs in Odoo work well; phantom BOMs let you model kits cleanly; subcontracting BOMs handle external operations. Routings let you sequence work centres, define expected times and set up work order steps for the shop-floor app.

The mistake we see most often is over-engineering BOMs from day one. Start with the minimum viable structure — the components, the key operations, the work centres that matter for capacity. Add complexity only when the floor proves it's needed. We've stripped out countless 'theoretical' BOM levels that no one was actually using on the floor.

Shop-floor execution and the new Workcenter app

Odoo's shop-floor app (formerly the Manufacturing kiosk and now the modern Workcenter app) is genuinely good for tablet-on-the-floor execution. Operators see their queue, start/pause/finish work orders, scan barcodes, record quality checks and trigger any alerts in the same flow. It's not an MES, but for SMEs it removes the paper that most factories still run on.

The setup discipline that matters: small, well-defined work order steps; barcoded routing; quality check points where operators actually need them, not theoretical ones. We've watched factories go from 'we'll never put tablets on the floor' to 'we can't imagine running without them' inside three months.

MRP run, capacity and the planning loop

Odoo's MRP run computes procurement and manufacturing orders from actual demand (sales orders, forecasts, reordering rules). For most SMEs, scheduling daily or even on-demand is enough. The Master Production Schedule (MPS) module covers basic forecasting; for more, you'll want a dedicated planning tool (or a good Excel process feeding Odoo).

Capacity management is the gap most often surfaced. Odoo schedules work centres by duration, but it isn't a finite-capacity scheduler in the APS sense. For shops where capacity is the constraint, plan to either use the workcenter capacity views with discipline, or add a planning module (OCA, third party) on top.

Odoo Quality lets you define quality control points in routings, in receipts, on finished goods. Operators record measurements, pass/fail, and trigger alerts that go to the right team. For non-regulated industries this is excellent. For regulated batch traceability, it's good for serial/lot tracking and full forward/backward traceability — but you'll layer in process discipline.

Lot and serial number tracking is native. We can trace a finished good back through every component, every work order, every operator and every quality check in seconds. For food, light pharma and any traceability-driven sector, this single capability often justifies the implementation.

It's not an APS (advanced planning system) — for finite-capacity scheduling you'll layer one on top — but for the typical Belgian SME factory it covers what's needed.

Can Odoo handle our food traceability requirements?

Yes for most food producers — lot tracking, expiry dates, full forward/backward traceability and supplier-to-customer chains are native. For pharma-grade GMP you'll need extra process discipline and possibly OCA modules; for FAVV/FASFC standard food traceability in Belgium, it's a strong fit and we have several food clients running it daily.

How does Odoo compare to dedicated MRP tools like Sage X3 or NetSuite for manufacturing?

For SMEs and lower mid-market manufacturers, Odoo competes well: lower licence cost, modern UX, real shop-floor app, clean integration with sales/inventory/accounting. For very large or process-heavy operations, the dedicated tools have deeper specialised features. The honest cut-off is roughly 100M€ revenue with simple processes — Odoo is the right choice. Above that or with very complex processes, do a real comparison.

Do we need the shop-floor app or can we keep paper work orders?

Odoo prints work orders if you want to keep paper. But the value of the shop-floor app — real-time status, integrated quality, no transcription errors — is enough that most clients adopt it within months even after starting on paper. We recommend a paper fallback for the first weeks of go-live, then deprecating it as operators get comfortable.

What about machine integration — can we connect PLCs to Odoo?

Possible but not native. For machine telemetry (counters, cycle times, alarms) you'll either build custom Python connectors via Odoo's API, use OCA IoT modules, or layer a dedicated MES that talks to both your machines and Odoo. The right answer depends on the complexity. For occasional production data sync, custom integration is fine; for full machine connectivity at scale, an MES is usually the right pattern.
